Welcome to our King Eider Safari!
Båtsfjord's amazing wildlife and birdwatching opportunities are well-known. Our fjord teems with fascinating life, including seals, eiders, and long-tailed ducks.
When the polar night ends in late January, Varanger and Båtsfjord turn into a photographer's paradise, attracting nature and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. The beautiful Arctic light during these winter months creates perfect conditions for your photos.
King Eiders, a rare sight in many parts of the world, find a home here in Båtsfjord, close to the village and harbor. These birds are relatively hard to reach in other parts of the world, such as Alaska, Greenland, or Siberia – you'd have to travel far to get those perfect pictures, but that's not the case in Båtsfjord – they are right here in our harbors. We're here to make your photography trip even easier and better accessible: we'll take you out on our RIB right where the birds are. You can expect to get many great photos when the birds are on the move, and some when they are together with their flock. We have years of experience offering photo trips to our guests, and know what it takes for you to get those perfect shots – how to approach the birds, and where to place the sun, for example, so that you get that perfect light in your photos.
Tour Description (60-75min):
Before Departure:
- Meet us at the dock by Båtsfjord Brygge 15 minutes before departure.
- We will provide you a warm flotation suit.
- Quick safety briefing regarding safety at sea.
At Sea:
- We take you to the best spots for photography, always adjusting the route based on bird locations.
- We cruise in the harbor areas of Båtsfjord and often head towards the end of the fjord towards the open sea.
- In addition to King Eiders, we often see sea eagles, seals, and porpoises - and sometimes even whales.
